Lady Dragons get win in 10 innings

PROCTORVILLE — It wasn’t their best, but it was good enough.

Despite five errors and six walks, the Fairland Lady Dragons beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 9-8 in 10 innings on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We played well, but we can play better. We executed in key spots,” said Fairland coach Mindy Clark.

Fairland had nine hits as Mackenzie Riley went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, Maddy Kazee 2-5 and two RBI, Ellen Hinshaw 2-5 and an RBI, Mollie Morris 2-6 and Allison Shepherd 1-5 with three runs batted in.

Kasey Murphy led Coal Grove as she went 3-5 with a home run and two RBI. Deanna Bentley was 3-4, Khylee Keaton and Racheal Webb 2-5 each, while Leah Crum, McKenzie Moore, Gracie Riley and Brooke Blakeman had one hit each.

Each team got a run in the first inning.

Coal Grove scored on an error, fielder’s choice and Riley’s RBI single.

Fairland scored when Morris singled, went to second on Caitlyn Stone’s sacrifice, moved up on a wild pitch and stole home.

The Lady Hornets went up 2-1 in the third on a walked to Bentley, two ground outs and an error.

Lauren Meyer walked, went to second on a passed ball and scored on Murphy’s base hit as Coal Grove led 3-1 in the top of the fifth.

But Fairland rallied to take a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the inning.

Morris reached on an error, Stone was safe on a fielder’s choice, Hinshaw had an RBI single, Shepherd sacrificed in a run and Riley had a two-run single.

Coal Grove tied the game in the seventh on a walked to Bentley, a fielder’s choice, Crum’s RBI single and another fielder’s choice.

Each team scored three runs in the ninth.

Murphy led off with a home run, Riley reached on a fielder’s choice, Keaton singled and Webb had a two-run double.

Fairland answered as Stone singled, stole second and third, Shepherd reached on an error for a run, Riley singled and Kazee had a two-run single.

In the 10th, Morris and Stone singled, Hinshaw walked and Shepherd sacrificed in the run.

Fairland visits Chesapeake on Monday.
