Hornets advance to regionals

CHILLICOTHE — Add a few more names to the regional meet list.

The second day of the Division III district track meet saw Coal Grove add a group of boys and girls’ track athletes to the regional meet.

The top four district qualifiers in each event advance to the regional meet to be held Wednesday, May 27, and Friday, May 29, at Fairfield Union High School. The top four finishers at the regional advance to the state meet.

Headlining the Hornets’ qualifiers was senior Brandon Adkins who set a school record by clearing 6-fee, 10-inches in the high jump.

Adkins is the Division III state champion.

Joe Akers had a big day as he finished third in the 300-meter hurdles at 42.30 seconds, fourth in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.93 seconds and fourth in the high jump at 5-6.

The Hornets’ 4×400 relay team of Josh Cecil, Isaiah Gunther, Tanner Henry and Jordan Lucas was second with a 3:40.19 time.

The 4×100 relay team of Ranze Large, Mark Sites, Tanner Dolen and Henry ran a 45.80 to place third.

Austen Pleasants — who won the discus — was second in the shot put with a 47-10 heave.

Henry ran a 23.72 and was third in the 200 meters to advance.

Several other Hornets’ placed in the meet.

Large was fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.99), Wyatt Schultz was seventh in the 800 meters (2:18), Tyrell Morrow sixth in the 3200 (12:02.15) and fifth in the 1600 (5:16.09), Michael Knuckles sixth in the 1600 (5:18.93), and the 4×200 team of Dolen, Henry, Sites and Lucas was fifth with a 1:37.42 clocking.

Belpre won the boys’ meet with 110.5 points, edging Coal Grove with 108.5 points.

In the girls’ meet, Leslie Mulkey led the Lady Hornets qualifiers.

Mulkey was third in the 400-meter dash with a 1:02.92 time and she was on the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams that qualified.

The 4×200 team of Chelsie Curry, Emily Compliment and Jacy Jones was fourth at 1:52.02.

The same quartet comprised the 4×100 team that was second at 53.12 seconds and they also combined to run the 4×400 in a 4:24.20 time to place fourth.

Courtlyn Lewis cleared 7-6 to finishes second in the pole vault.

Also placing for the Lady Hornets was Jones who was sixth in the 200 meters at 27.68 seconds while Tori Holmes was sixth in the 1600 (5:50.4) and seventh in the 3200 (13:42.49).

Reedsville Eastern won the girls’ meet with 113 points. The Lady Hornets were eighth with 42 points.
