ASHLAND, Ky.— Take a trip back to the World War II era at the second World War II Walking Tour Saturday, June 13 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center.

The event is hosted by the Highlands Museum and the Eastern Kentucky Military Historical Society and tours run every 30 minutes with the last tour beginning at 3:30 p.m.

“Last year’s event was an overwhelming success with 400 people participating,” Emily Roush, education and marketing director at the museum, said. “The tour is such a great event because it transports participants back 70 years to downtown Ashland during the Second World War. The tour takes place on Winchester Avenue on the blocks comprising the downtown business district.”

Lining the sidewalks will be enlarged photographs taken in the early 1940s of what Ashland looked like during the war. Many businesses will also have period or patriotic decorations up as well.

“WWII is such a fascinating and important time in our nation’s history. The way the community rallied to support the war effort is truly inspiring,” Roush said. “The tour really engages people and brings history to life. People learn about Ashland during the past, but also get to witness how the city has changed over time. I think that’s why there was such an overwhelming response from everyone.”
