Kathleen Tompkins

Sept. 18, 1948-May 23, 2015

Kathleen S. Tompkins, 66, of Riverside, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015, after a courageous six-year battle with cancer.  She was born Sept. 18, 1948, in Ironton, to the late William and Lyndall (Cox) Rapp.  Kathy was preceded in death by her brother, Rusty Rapp and aunt, Carolyn.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Tompkins; children, Summer Jack and Charles Rapp and his daughter, Tara; stepchildren, Harry (Lisa) Tompkins II and Erick (Carey) Tompkins; siblings, Dan Rapp, Tim Rapp and Larry Rapp; numerous surviving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Kathy earned a doctorate in psychology from Wright State University and was a practicing psychologist with United Health Care.  She was an avid golfer and bowler.  Kathy loved her family and friends unconditionally and will be dearly missed by all those that knew her.

She is healed, free and at peace.  We are sure she has joined her mother, Carolyn and Peggy Crowe in a fierce game of Boggle.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday Newcomer Funeral Home, North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Road. Family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until time of service. Johnna Jones

March 11, 1931-May 29, 2015

Mrs. Johnna Jean Eaton Jones, 84, of South Point, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 29, 2015 at home.  She was born March 11, 1931, in Chesapeake, a daughter of the late John B. Eaton and Inez Thacker Eaton.  She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ernest P. Jones; one son, Gregory E. Jones (Ella) of South Point; two grandsons whom she adored, Joshua Jones (Cassie) of Columbus, and Caleb Jones of South Point; granddaughter, Lucy Fout; a sister, Carolyn E. Smith; brother-in-law, Harold L. Sheets; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  In addition to her parents, a sister, Emma Belle Sheets, preceded her in death.  Johnna was a graduate, majorette, and valedictorian of Chesapeake High School and held undergraduate and graduate degrees from Marshall University.  She taught fourth grade for one year then the first grade for many years at South Point Elementary No. 2.  She was a member of South Point United Methodist Church and frequently served as a pianist there.  Johnna led a very active life and especially enjoyed the game of golf, both following the various tournaments on television and golfing with her many friends and the Ladies Nine Holers Club at the Ironton Country Club.  She will be greatly missed by her family members and friends who will fondly treasure her memory and her zest for life.  Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, by the Rev. JoAnn Lange

Jo Ann Lange, 69, of Proctorville, died Friday, May 29, 2015, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington, West Virginia. Jo Ann is survived by her husband of 50 years, Gary C. Lange, Sr.

Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, by pastor Gordon Simpson.

Ruth Ann Gallaher

May 8, 1938-May 26, 2015

Ruth Ann Melvin Gallaher, 77, of Huntington, West Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at her residence. Born May 8, 1938 in Coal Grove, she was the daughter of the late Marion and Mary Ann (Burger) Melvin. Ruth was a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Ironton. She retired in 2010 as a hospice nurse in South Florida. Ruth was a feisty lady who loved to read and enjoyed martinis. She is survived by her children, Brenda (Alfred) Boudreaux of Louisiana, and Bruce Gallaher (Kristin) of Huntington; her sister, Margaret (Dan) Tipton of Florida; her grandchildren, Blake Gallaher of Florida, Brendan Gallaher of Florida, Ezra Hall of WV, Juliann (Daniel) Parker of Georgia and Joseph Kowalski of Louisiana; her nephew and niece, John (Marie) Tipton of Ohio, Denise (Wayne) Mitchell of Ohio, and close family friend, Mike Zuliani of Huntington.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the Tri-State Cremation Services. Carolyn Jenkins

Dec. 19, 1953-May 29, 2015

Carolyn Sue (Sexton) Jenkins, 61, of Ironton passed away Friday, May 29, 2015, at her residence.  The Carter County native was born Dec. 19, 1953, a daughter to the late Orville and Etta (Hundley) Sexton.  Mrs. Jenkins is preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. Jenkins, Jr., who passed away in 2002.

Carolyn was a homemaker who loved her family dearly.  She also loved to listen to music, karaoke, spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, working in the garden and hanging out with friends.

Carolyn is survived by two daughters, Tasha (Scottie) Jenkins and Tisha Jenkins, both of Ironton; a son, Nathan Jenkins of Ironton; two grandchildren, Laura Damron of Huntington, West Virginia and Tracy Damron, also of Huntington; four great grandchildren; a special granddaughter, Lila Dee Jenkins of Ironton; and two sisters and one brother

In addition to her husband and parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by a daughter, Goldie Jenkins; and a special friend, Richard Casey.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. James Cremeans officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Hanging Rock Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Betty Lutz

Betty Lutz peacefully went home to God on May 28, 2015, following a brief hospitalization at Dublin Methodist Hospital in Columbus. Betty was born in Ironton, and was a longtime resident there until moving to Columbus in 2009. Betty was a teacher for over 30 years in elementary and high school; and she also devoted many years of her life to the Ken-O-Valley Council, Girl Scouts of America, as a professional field director. She was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1929. She also participated in AAUW and the Business and Professional Women.  She graduated from Ohio University, Athens.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Earl V. and Elizabeth I. Wade; her husband, Killian F. Lutz; and her brother-in-law, Gail D. Turley. Betty is survived by her devoted sister, Barbara W. Turley and her stepchildren, Sheila Lutz, Fr. Kevin F. Lutz, and Michaeleen (Ed) Wesley. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bridget (Bryan) Hamilton, Catherine (Andrew) Butler, Erin (Christopher) Bennett and Michael Wesley.

Betty was known lovingly as “Gigi” (great-grandmother) to her great-grandchildren, Jacob, Annie and Gabriel Hamilton, who will miss her very much. Betty also leaves behind an extended family of nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her faithful feline friend, Tabatha.

Friends and relatives are welcome at Phillips Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Monday for calling hours. A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Eric Barnes from First Baptist Church will officiate with Betty’s stepson, Father Kevin F. Lutz, from St. Mary’s of German Village.

Johnny Cobern

Jan. 14, 1955-May 28, 2015

Johnny Joe Cobern, 60, of Ironton, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 28, 2015, in the Southern Ohio Hospice Care Center in Portsmouth.

Mr. Cobern was born Jan. 14, 1955, in Ironton, a son of the late George and Frances Jones Cobern, Sr,.  He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Cobern and Jeff Cobern.

He is survived by eight sisters, Gail Hamilton of Raceland, Kentucky, Linda Wilson, Debbie Hieronmus, Diane Wilson and Tammy Burke, all of Ironton, Becky Brooks of Hanging Rock, Brenda Porter of Portsmouth, and Teresa Sopp of Florida; and two brothers, George Cobern, Jr. of West Portsmouth and Gary Cobern of Ironton. Visitation will be at the Evans Funeral Home in Raceland at 11 a.m. on Monday with funeral services being conducted at 1 p.m. by the Dr. Tom Melvin.  Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Wheelersburg.

 

 

Mike Fannin

July 11, 1939-May 28, 2015

Philip Michael Fannin, 75, retired Ironton businessman, went to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, May 28, 2015, surrounded by family at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia.  The Ironton native was born on July 11, 1939, the son of the late Walden Richard and Helen V. Hoptry Fannin..

He was united in marriage to Carolyn Jean Roadcup at Central Christian Church on May 10, 1962. During their married life they lived in Ironton, and for a few years in Columbus.

Mike was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.  He loved people and his home was always open for Mike and Carolyn to share their special gift of hospitality.  He was a Christian and member of Central Christian Church. He graduated from Ironton High School with the Class of 1957. It was there that Mike and Carolyn’s lifelong romance began that flourished through the years.

After high school, Mike served in U.S. Army Reserves. He was honorably discharged in 1962. During this time he also attended Ohio University Ironton Branch and graduated from Ashland Business School in 1961.

Mike began his employment career at Wente Construction Company, later working at Chamberlain Company and Allied Chemical Sement Solvay. In 1969 he and his family moved to Columbus, to work at the Greater Ohio Agency Associates, Inc., a family-owned insurance agency.  After the sale of the agency, the family returned to Ironton. During the next 30 years Mike was involved in the purchase and operation of several retail businesses, as well as commercial and domestic rental properties, all in Ironton. He enjoyed all of his grandchildren’s activities and he was an avid golfer.

Mike was preceded in death by his loving son, Richard Michael Fannin on March 7, 2011, a sister, Joan Fannin and his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; two daughters, Deborah Jean (Mrs. Curtis) Cooke and Christi Lynn (Mrs. Aaron) Heighton; a daughter-in-law, Amanda Hutchinson Fannin; five grandchildren, Joshua Curtis Cooke, Mariah Jean Cooke, Madelyn Elaine Heighton, Matthew James Heighton and Mitchell Aaron Heighton. He is also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, J Patric and Mary Kingery Fannin of Ironton; sister-in-law, Juanita Roadcup of Ironton; brother-in-law, Orion Roadcup and wife Patty, also of Ironton, and four nephews, Jordan Patric Fannin, Christian Michael Fannin, David Roadcup, Stephen Roadcup, niece Kathy (Mrs. Rocky) Crawford and his canine companion, Heidi.

Pallbearers are Curtis Cooke, Joshua Cooke, Christian Fannin, Jordan Fannin, Aaron Heighton, Jim Heighton, Johnnie Keiser and Bill Lorenz.  Honorary pallbearers are: Matthew Heighton and Mitchell Heighton.

Funeral service will be held at Central Christian Church in Ironton, at 1 p.m. on Monday with ministers Willie Purdee and Jim Williams officiating.  Visitation will precede the service at the church from 11a.m.-1 p.m. Burial will be in the family plot at Woodland Cemetery.
