UPPER TOWNSHIP — A Township Road 606 home was destroyed by a fire Tuesday around 1:30 p.m.

Upper Township Fire Chief J.D. Pancake said the fire started in a room or deck on an upper level at the end of the house.

“The house is not livable. We had to tear the Sheetrock off of the ceiling because it burnt between the ceiling and the roof,” Pancake said. “The fire was too bad to try and figure out what started it, but our personnel did everything in their power to stop it.”

Along with the Upper Township Volunteer Fire Department, the volunteer fire departments of Elizabeth and Lawrence Townships and Coal Grove responded to the scene.

“No one was in the house at the time of the fire,” Pancake said. “The homeowner was at a neighbor’s house and saw that her house was on fire. She said that she is the only one that lived in the house.”

Pancake said his department went back to the house around 6:30 p.m. because the fire rekindled, and that they were going to go back and check it an hour and a half later.

Water from the city of Ironton was also used. The fire is currently under investigation.
