Lawrence County residents took advantage of a food giveaway put on by Facing Hunger Foodbank of Huntington as they lined up across the street from the Ironton First Nazarene Church.

“Facing Hunger Foodbank gets donations from Walmart, Kroger and other independent grocers and donors,” Jamie Shears, of the food bank, said. “We have a giveaway in Lawrence County once a month.”

A variety of items were available including meat, produce, baked goods, dairy, water and other beverages.

“Residents have to show an ID or bring a utility bill so we know they’re residents of Lawrence County,” Shears said. “Then they sign up and give their name with how many are in the household and what age group.”

Shears said knowing the general age group is important because certain items are more geared toward children.

“I don’t live here now, but I was born and raised here. It’s good to be back here and help out the community and try to give back,” Shears said. “All of the locations where we have giveaways, we get volunteers that help us out. It’s a whole community effort.”

Besides the Ironton First Nazarene Church, Facing Hunger Foodbank also has Lawrence County giveaways at Central Christian Church and Campbell Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
