FRANKLIN FURNACE — SunCoke Energy’s Haverhill North Coke Company coke making plant is the main producer of coke, carbonized coal and a main material in steel, for AK Steel and ArcelorMittal.

The plant purchases coal from multiple mines in Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia, turns it into coke and sends it back out to its customers while producing its own steam and some electricity that is used by the company.

The plant features 200 total ovens and two quench towers used for cooling the coke down just before it gets broken up into the right size pieces before being sent off.

To learn more about the total coke making process and the plant in general, see the Sunday, June 28 issue of The Tribune.
