CINCINNATI (AP) — Mike Leake improved from his last start. Against the Milwaukee Brewers this weekend, that wasn’t enough.

Rookie Taylor Jungmann allowed four hits in eight innings and the Brewers extended their winning streak to eight games with a 6-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.

Leake (5-5) lost for the first time since May 27. He was 3-0 in six June starts.

Leake allowed eight hits and three runs with three walks and four strikeouts in six innings.

“They’re a hot team right now,” Leake said. “They’re finding holes. They were fouling off good pitches and made it tough on me. They made me pay for mistakes.”

In his previous start, Leake gave up seven runs in four innings in a no-decision against Minnesota.

Gerardo Parra and Adam Lind hit seventh-inning home runs for the Brewers, who finished off their second undefeated road trip of at least seven games in franchise history.

It’s the Brewers’ longest winning streak since they won nine in a row in April 2014.

Jungmann, who made his major league debut on June 9, retired the first 12 batters before Jay Bruce led off the fifth with a double into the right-field corner.

Bruce went to third when Shane Peterson trapped Marlon Byrd’s line drive single to left. The Reds, hitting just .212 with runners in scoring position, didn’t take advantage.

Ivan De Jesus Jr. hit a one-hopper to third that forced Byrd with Bruce holding. Tucker Barnhart hit into a double play when Jungmann deflected the ball hit up the middle.

“We need to do better at doing the little thing,” manager Bryan Price said. “It is something you say when you get outplayed and get drubbed.”

Jungmann (3-1) lost his shutout when Skip Schumaker scored from first on Brandon Phillips’ double with two outs in the eighth on a ball that left fielder Peterson had in his glove before slamming into the wall.

Milwaukee also went 7-0 on a road trip in 2008, sweeping three in San Francisco and four in St. Louis from July 18 through July 24.

It was Milwaukee’s first sweep in Cincinnati since a three-game series on Sept. 16-18, 2011.

Aramis Ramirez gave Milwaukee a 1-0 lead and extended his hitting streak to eight games with a two-out RBI single in the first inning — the sixth time the Brewers scored in the first inning on the seven-game road trip.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Brewers: CF Carlos Gomez sat out with a bruised left wrist after being hit by a pitch that forced him to leave Saturday’s game in the fifth inning. “I don’t think he’s going to miss much time,” manager Craig Counsell said.

Reds: LHP Tony Cingrani is scheduled to make the next appearance of his rehab assignment on Tuesday for Triple-A Louisville. The Reds hope to get Cingrani stretched out enough to fill a variety of roles, including possibly starting, Price said.

UP NEXT

Brewers: Milwaukee returns home for a series against Atlanta. RHP Kyle Lohse (5-9, 6.24 ERA) is scheduled to start on Monday.

Reds: Begin a six-game road trip with the first of three on Monday against the Nationals, who were swept in three games at Cincinnati in May. Anthony DeSclafani (5-6, 3.63) is Monday’s scheduled starter.

WELCOME BACK

Reds CF Jason Bourgeois made his first start since Sept. 28. He sustained a small fracture in his shoulder in spring training. He was activated on June 28.

STREAKING BYRD

Byrd extended his hitting streak to 10 games with two of the Reds’ four hits. He is hitting .341 during the streak, raising his average to a season-high .244.
