Beulah Shuff

Beulah Mae Shuff, 77, of Willow Wood, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at a local health care facility. The Lawrence County native was born May 6, 1938, a daughter of the late George and Marie Walls Shuff.

Beulah was a graduate of Waterloo High School, a former sewing machine operator for Wilson’s Sporting Goods and a member of Mt. Pleasant/Old Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert Shuff, Elmo Shuff and Donald Shuff; three sisters, Audrey Shuff, Mary Callicoat and Fay Maxine Smathers; two grandchildren, Johnny Ray Davis and Eloise Davis; and a special friend, Hatler Robinson.

She is survived by a son, John K. (Thelma) Davis, of Coal Grove; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Lowell “Joe” and Nancy Shuff, Samuel Shuff, and Lloyd and Becky Shuff; four grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Smathers officiating. Burial will follow in Palestine Cemetery and visitation will be Saturday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Lawrence Schilling

Lawrence Edward Schilling, 94, of Ironton, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at his residence, with his family at his side. Mr. Schilling was born Jan. 26, 1921, in Hanging Rock, a son to the late Fred and Bertha (Henry) Schilling. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Ethel Blankenship Schilling.

Mr. Schilling was a graduate of Hanging Rock High School. He was a World War II veteran with the Army Air Corp 303rd Bomb Group, flying 34 missions. He retired from Allied Chemical Tar Plant in 1982 after 37 years of service. Mr. Schilling was a member of the VFW and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, hunting and fishing. He was known for his heirloom tomatoes and his beautiful rose garden. Mr. Schilling was a 91-year member of Ohio Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by daughter, Wanda Price; and two brothers, Fredrick and Earl Schilling.

He is survived by daughter, Karen (Eddy) Hensley, of Ironton; grandson and best buddy, Shannon Hensley, of Ironton; and brother, Donald Schilling, of San Antonio, Texas.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Woodland Cemetery with pastor Brett McGraw officiating. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post #6878. Helen Leach

Helen Ruth Compton Leach died at her home on July 29, 2015, in Ironton, at the age of 71.

Helen is survived by her son, Charles Timothy (Angie Norris) Leach; daughters, Katrina (Tony) Keith, of Ironton, and Michelle (John) Stapleton, of Killeen, Texas; grandchildren, Taylor Klaiber, Brandon Leach, Major Brice, TJ Keith, D’Laynie Keith and Teran Keith, of Ironton and Cory, Karlye and Aaron Stapleton, of Killeen, Texas; great-grandchildren, Chassidy and Lylah Stapleton, of Killeen, Texas and Brantley Leach, Marley Brice and Armani Keith, of Ironton; sisters, Juanita (Woodrow) Spillman, of Lexington, Kentucky, and Evelyn (Don) Walters, of Mt. City, Tennessee.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Louis and Cora Compton; her brothers, Melvin Louis, James Franklin and Robert Eugene Compton; and sister, Elsie Mae Compton.

Helen was born on April 12, 1944, in Flatwoods, Kentucky, to Louis M. and Cora Easterling Compton. She was a 1962 graduate of Ironton High School. She married her childhood sweetheart, Charles A. Leach.

Helen was an accomplished baker and skilled line dancer. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren play football, basketball and volleyball. She became the team “grandma.”

Helen was a member of the Church of the King, where she worshipped her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at noon at Church of the King in Ironton. Calling hours will be 10 a.m.-noon prior to the service prior to the service. Pastor Butch Deer will officiate the ceremony. Interment will follow at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Russell, Kentucky.
