CHESAPEAKE — Keeping Symmes Creek clean of trash is the goal of the Symmes Creek Restoration Committee, and making that task fun is what the group tries to do with its canoe caper event scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Chesapeake boat launch site.

“We’ve been doing this for many years,” Joe Benning, chairman of Symmes Valley Restoration Committee board of directors, said. “We will have T-shirts for participants and we’ll serve food.”

Participants will go out on canoes and collect trash. Boy Scout Troop 115 of South Point will bring canoes, although it is encouraged to bring your own.

“We usually have different categories for collecting trash,” Benning said. “We are always looking for ways to make this more creative.”

Benning said the event is the group’s biggest fundraiser for the year and proceeds will go toward improvements for the Symmes Creek watershed.

Raffle tickets will be sold for $3 each, two for $5 or eight for $20 with the top prize being a 14.6-foot canoe. Other donated prizes will be raffled off as well.

All are welcome to come out, ride a canoe and take part in cleaning the area. Benning said the event usually wraps up around 1 or 2 p.m.

“Ultimately the goal is to have fun and pick up trash,” Benning said. “We’re hoping we get a good showing for it.”
