COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio State University is taking steps to ensure the name of football coach Urban Meyer doesn’t show up on knock-off apparel.
The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1IxeDSs ) reports the university has secured a trademark designation for that name.
Former coaches such as Jim Tressel have had agreements and protections for the use of their name embedded in their contracts, but this is the first time Ohio State has registered a coach’s name as a trademark.
Trademarks for “Urban Meyer” and “Urban Meyer Knows” were issued on July 7.
The designation provides protection on clothing for men, women and children. Half of the resulting royalties will go to the university and the other half to Meyer, who plans to funnel those funds to a family foundation.
