Ronald Meeks

Ronald R. Meeks, 76, of Kitts Hill, went home to rejoice in God’s Kingdom Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, at the local Community Hospice Care Center. He was a hard worker who always had time for his family, and was a one-of-a-kind man. The Ironton native was born Nov. 10, 1938, a son to the late Alice Meeks-Cromley.

Mr. Meeks was a 1956 graduate of Ironton High School. Ron served in the United States Marine Corp and was a foreman at the Ironton Solvey and retired from the Ashland Coke Division after 27 years of service as a supervisor. He attended Sugar Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

Ron was a member of the Scottish Rite Freemasonry. In his younger years he was an avid golfer, Boy Scout Master and a deacon at Central Christian Church.

Ron always looked forward to Saturdays in the fall when The Ohio State University Buckeyes would be playing football. You never saw him without wearing an Ohio State hat.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Lou (Bush) Meeks, who he was married to for 44 years; his second wife, Linda M. (Derifield) Meeks, whom he married on Nov. 13, 2007; two half-brothers, Emory Meeks and William Meeks; and a nephew, Stephen A. Ream.

He is survived by a son, David Meeks, of Kitts Hill; a daughter, Susan (Kyle) Clement, of Kitts Hill; a half-brother, John Jack Keegan, of Florida; a sister-in-law, Retha Ream, of Texas, two nieces, Lea Ream-Smith and Michelle Richardson, of Texas; a sister-in-law, Brenda Derifield Hosey, of Pedro; a brother-in-law, Michael (Carol) Derifield, of Valdez, Alaska; three stepsons, James (Abby) Allen, of Dayton; John (Debi) Allen, of Ironton, and Lonnie (Wendy) Nixon of Supply, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Samantha Meeks and Jani Meeks; and four great-grandchildren, Kenneth “Bub” Millhouse Jr., Ian Millhouse, Kymella Loyons and Colton Lyons.

Funeral services will be noon Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, with pastor Timothy Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be at 11 a.m. Thursday until time of the service at the funeral home. Wayne Addis

Wayne E. Addis, 77, of Ironton, formerly of Pedro, passed away Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015, at the Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth. The Lawrence County native was born April 26, 1938 a son of the late Edna Addis.

Mr. Addis was a graduate of Blackfork High School, was a member of Woodland Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. He was a former coach with the Pedro Little League and lived all of his life in Lawrence County. He retired from the maintenance department for Dayton Malleable and Ironton Iron Company.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn A. DePriest Addis, whom he married June 12, 1960, and passed on Aug. 15, 2005; son, Wayne (Sonny) Addis Jr.; and brother, Gerald Addis.

He is survived by wife, Wanda Stewart Gillespie Addis, whom he married Aug. 25, 2007; daughter, Vickie Ingels, of Pedro; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Diana Addis, of Pedro; son, Steven Addis, of Portsmouth; daughter and son-in-law, Keena and Darren Schug, of Ironton; three stepchildren, Scott (Amy) Gillespie, of Bristow, Virginia, Troy (Tinessa) Gillespie, of Ironton; and Bambi (Rich) Turvey, of Ironton; 12 grandchildren, Jason Addis, Brooke Addis, Justin Addis, Kaleena Wiseman, Cody Ingels, Joshua Addis, Jeremy Addis, Kara Addis, Tiana Addis, Amber Benton, Craig Addis, and Morgan Schug; four stepgrandchildren, Andrew Wilds, Alston Haas, Olivia Gillespie and Brandon Haas; and 28 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and family members.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home with Brother Dave Schug officiating. Burial will be in Puckett Cemetery with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall of Woodland Chapel Church. Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Virgie Derifield

Virgie E. Waller Derifield, 91, of South Point, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, in Jo-Lin Health Center.

Funeral service will be noon Wednesday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home with pastor James Beals officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery.

Virgie was born Nov. 3, 1923, in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late William Averill and Mary Etta Goings Carrico. She was a member of Getaway Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and played piano for many years. Virgie attended Dawson-Bryant Schools, worked at Sylvania Electric and Perry Novel Shoe Factory before retiring as a seamstress from Huntington Dress Factory. She was also a devoted caregiver to her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Fred Waller and Robert Derifield; her sisters, Lella Shoemaker, Helen Ferguson, Geneva Sparling and Edna Clay; and her brothers, Orville, Clyde, Joe, Earl, Paul Vernon, Don and Ray Carrico. Virgie is survived by her children, Fred (Jo Etta) Waller, David (Carol) Waller, and Judy (Jim) Beals, all of Ironton; her grandchildren, Jami (Eric) Holmes, Aaron (Kathy) Beals, Robin (Bill) Boyd, Michael (Teresa) Waller, Richard Waller and Jody (Norma) Beals; 12 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Harold (Edna) Carrico, of Ironton.

Donna Haas

Donna Jean Roman Huff Haas, 75, of South Point, passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. The Ironton native was born July 4, 1940, a daughter of the late Ivan L. and Mary Baumgard Roman.

Donna was a graduate of 1958 graduate of South Point High School. She worked in the payroll department for over 40 years at Allied Chemical and AK Steel, retiring in 2002. Donna was a member of the Solida Baptist Church for over 70 years, where she was a beloved Sunday school teacher for over 20 years. She also attended Mamre Baptist Church after she and Sonny were married. She loved doing yard work, baking, working in her flowers and spending time with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Orville “Sonny” Haas, who passed away March 31, 2013; and a niece, Elizabeth Shaffer

She is survived by a son, Jeffrey and Martha Huff, of Columbus; a daughter, Cheryl and Kevin Gillen, of Palm City, Florida; two step-sons, Mark and Deanna Haas, of Ironton and Burt and Angie Haas, of Coal Grove; four grandchildren, Amy Johnson and her husband, Jake, Aaron Huff and his wife, Tenille, both of Delaware, PFC Ryan Gillen, and Kendall Gillen, both of Palm City, Florida; three step-grandchildren, Kaylyn Taylor and her husband Kyle, of Pedro, Shelby Haas, of Ironton, and Alivia Haas, of Coal Grove; a sister, Karen Rose Shaffer and her husband, Doug, of South Point; three nephews, Greg and Angie Shaffer, Mark and Sissy Shaffer and David and Traci Shaffer, all of South Point; several great-grandchildren; and many cousins and other family members.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home with pastor Aaron Childers officiating.
