Ruth Akers
Sept. 6, 1943—Aug. 17, 2015

Ruth A. Bailey Akers, 71, of Pedro, entered Heaven’s gate Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. The Lawrence County native was born Sept. 6, 1943, a daughter of the late Ernest Bailey and Hazel Layne Bailey. Mrs. Akers attended Pedro High School and was a member of Pleasant Valley Freewill Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a yard sale queen that enjoyed spending time in her garden and was a loving mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by, in addition to her parents, her loving husband of 50 years, Lee Roy Akers, whom she married Dec. 27, 1963, and passed away on Dec. 27, 2013; grandson, Matthew Ryan Bloomfield; two brothers, Carl and Rose Bailey and Ernest “Bugs” Bailey Jr.; and three sisters, Edna “Jean” Joseph, Freda and Jim Sinnott and Sara Bailey.

She is survived by son, Scott Akers of Wheelersburg; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Joe Friend of Pedro; daughter and son-in-law, Jonda and Robert Dyer of Port Richey, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Beth Akers of Ironton; daughter, Kimberly Akers of Ironton; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Nancy Akers of Pedro; son and daughter-in-law, Lee Roy and Alicia Akers of Pedro; one special grandson, Nathan Bloomfield, and 16 other grandchildren; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Barb Bailey of Ironton; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and the late Betty Bailey of Ironton; brother and sister-in-law, Denny and Lisa Bailey of Orlando, Florida; brother, Frank Bailey of Pedro; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Karen Bailey of Kitts Hill; sister and brother-in-law, Hilda and the late Charles Jenkins of Pedro; sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Ernest Holbrook of Pedro; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Leroy Holbrook of Hanging Rock; sister and brother-in-law, Faye and the late Mike Fox of Pedro; sister; Shirley Bailey of Ironton; sister-in-law, Charlotte Bailey, of Pedro; and special friends, Teresa and Gene Kidd, Susie and Elmo Webb, Manuel and Judy Romero and Eloise Dunn, all of Pedro; and Betty Cox of Decatur

Charles Yates
May 9, 1935 — Aug. 9, 2015

Charles L. Yates, 80, of Coal Grove, passed away on Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at Sunset Nursing Center, Coal Grove.

He was born May 9, 1935, in Shelbiana, Kentucky, a son of the late William McKinley Yates and Cora Childers Yates. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Rist; and two brothers, Edsel Yates and Rex Yates.

Charles was retired with 37 years of service from C & O Railroad as a conductor. He was a member of Zoar Baptist Church, former owner of Hetty’s Lunch in Coal Grove, an employee with the Lawrence County Engineer and the owner of C.L.’s Barber Shop.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Cope Yates; five children, Jackie (Ronnie) Jenkins, Bambi (Bernie) Yates Hensley, Charles “Chuck” (Sharon) Yates, Jr., Melissa “Missy” (Kevin) Yates Jenkins and Robert “Mac” Yates; a sister, Billie Morris; a sister-in-law, Shirley Yates; 11 grandchildren, Jeff Shuff, Derek (Jessi) Newman, Amelia Newman, Morgan Yaniko, Caleb Newman, Casey Newman, Corey Newman, Nicholas Yates, Alyssa Bare, Rachel Osborne and Garrin Yates; six great-grandchildren, Lexi, Koen, Cash, Ryder, Austin and Taryn; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Funeral services will be noon Thursday at Zoar Baptist Church, Coal Grove with pastor Jim Beals officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Leona Riffe Williams, 81, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, died Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at Trinity Station Retirement Community in Flatwoods, Ky. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Kentucky, with pastor Chuck Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods. Helen Hardy
April 1, 1932— Aug. 17, 2015

Helen Marie Hardy, 83, of Ironton, passed away Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, in Ironton. The Lawrence county native was born April 1, 1932, a daughter of the late Chester Butler and Mary Boyd Butler. She was of the Baptist faith and retired from River Valley Hospital in 1993 after being a nursing assistant for 25 years.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husband, Thomas D. Hardy; sister, Margaret F. Perry; and son-in-law, Jerry L. Clayton.

She is survived by daughter, Deborah E. Clayton of Ironton; daughter, Lucinda (George) McCalvin of Ironton; sister, Carol J. Witt of Ironton; grandchildren, Thomas M. McCalvin, Sissy (Danny) Wheeler and Rachelle L. Clayton; great-grandchild, Carleigh Holston; niece, Lynn Witt; nephew, Tim Witt; and great-niece, Ashley Witt.
