Velma Johnson

Velma E. Davis Johnson, 89, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at the Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Olive Hill, Kentucky native was born Jan. 18, 1925, a daughter of the late Walter Davis and Margaret Conn Davis.

Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Coal Grove High School and member of Central Christian Church in Ironton. She had lived most of her life in Lawrence County and was a former machinist helper for General Motors.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon and Daryl Davis; and one sister, Pauline McKee.

She is survived by one daughter, Wanda Shattuck; three sons, Fredrick, Joseph and Thomas Shattuck; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and a devoted nephew, Daryl Davis of Coal Grove.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Woodland Cemetery, Section D with the Rev. Richard Carter officiating. There will be no visitation. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillipsfuneralhome.net. Phillips Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

 

 

Leah Adams

Leah Emileen Adams went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015, following an extended illness. The Lawrence County native was born Nov. 7, 1951.

Miss Adams was a 1968 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School and the St. Mary’s School of Nursing. She served her country as a nurse in the United States Army at West Point. Following that, she was a nurse at local hospitals and care facilities until she retired. She attended the Community Missionary Baptist Church in Deering.

She is preceded in death by her father, Emerson E. Adams; and two sisters, Judith Linda Waugh and Wilma Sue Esser.

She is survived by her mother, Lois Eileen Christian Adams; a niece, Michelle Bowman; a nephew, Jeff (Rose) Palmer; two great-nieces, Courtney (Zach) Nelson and Paige Palmer; great-nephew, Robert (Jessi) Easterling and their children, Michaela and Patrick Easterling.

Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Community Cemetery with pastor David Lambert officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.phillispfuneralhome.net.

 

 

Phillip Drummond

Phillip D. Drummond, 67, of Patriot, passed away Wednesday Aug. 19, 2015, at his residence. The Springfield native was born Nov. 23, 1947, a son of the late Beryl and Ruth Pyles Drummond.

Phillip was a graduate of Springfield High School and was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He retired in 2006 from Adelphia Cable after 30 years of service.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Drummond.

He is survived by fiancée, Elizabeth Cade Sharp, of Patriot; two daughters, Christine and Steve Roberts, of Lakeworth, Florida and Kimbler Drummond, of West Palm Beach, Florida; two sons, Michael Drummond and Phillip Drummond, both of West Palm Beach, Florida; two sisters, Beryl and Bill Nagy, of Cleveland and Bonnie Drummond, of Columbus; a brother, Doug and Joyce Drummond, of Patriot; two stepchildren; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

George Blevins

George Richard “Rick” Blevins, 63, of Russell, Kentucky, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Sue Stevens-Blevins. Funeral services will be at the First Baptist Church of Russell on Saturday at 1 p.m. with pastor Ken Gowin delivering comforting words to those in attendance. Visitation for friends and family after 11 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at a later date. Brenda Barber

Brenda K. Barber, 69, formerly of Ironton, passed away Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, at Southern Hills Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
She was born Sept. 7, 1945, in Little Rock, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Winston C. Harrison and Jewell D. Wall.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marsha Huston. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Letha and Jesse Anderson, of Rockvale, Tennessee; and a son and daughter-in-law, William “Willie” and Jody Barber, of Wurtland, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Westena, Annika and Eli Anderson, of Rockvale, Tennessee, Sasha Massie, of Coal Grove, Alex and Matthew Barber, of Wurtland, Kentucky; one brother, Corbit Harrison, of Middletown; as well as aunts, uncles and two special nieces.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, at O’Keefe Baker Funeral Home, Ironton, with the Rev. Steve Harvey officiating.  Interment will follow in Haverhill Cemetery, Haverhill.

 

Dennis Lowe

Dennis Wayne Lowe, 73, of Scottown, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia. Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville. Burial will follow in Miller Memorial Gardens, Miller.
