SOUTH POINT — Teams learn from their mistakes. They can also learn from their opponents.

The St. Joseph Flyers got plenty of teaching moments on Thursday as the South Point Pointers held on for a 5-3 soccer win.

The Flyers fell behind 3-0 in the first half and 4-0 to begin the second half before cutting the deficit to 4-3.

“South Point took it to us those first 45 minutes. I give them credit for that,” said Flyers’ coach Mike Balestra. “We need to learn to get a good start and continue to finish the way we have so far this season.”

Jake Helton got the Pointers off to a strong start with two unassisted goals. He then had an assist as Jordan Overstreet made it 3-0.

A goal by Smith to open the second half increased the Pointers’ lead to 4-0.

But then the Flyers rallied on an unassisted goal by Blake Balestra and two goals by Peyton Adkins with assists from Baletra and Isaac Whaley.

Alex O’Malley sealed the win for the Pointers with a goal off an assist from Ryan Brown.

“We were a total different team from out first outing,” said Balestra. “The first 45 minutes of the game we did not play well. We made numerous mistakes and spotted South Point four goals before we decided to play.”

The Flyers visit Ohio Valley Christian on Tuesday.
