SOUTH POINT — It’s getting better all the time.

After losing their first game, the Pointers beat Russell and tied Minford and are now 2-1-1 overall.

Coach Zane Joy said the team is improving in the wake of heavy graduation losses from last season.

“We’re starting to click and coming together,” said Joy. “We played well. We’re recovering well. The guys are growing up and stepping up.”

On Saturday, South Point and Russell were scoreless in the first half. The Pointers then got an unassisted goal by Jake Helton at the 53-minute mark to take a 1-0 lead.

Austin Brown had an unassisted goal to tie the game for Russell but Jordan Overstreet’s penalty kick proved South Point with the margin of victory.

Pointers’ goal Eli Lucas had four saves.

The Pointers and Falcons battled to a 2-2 tie on Tuesday.

Minford scored at the 11-minute mark on a goal by Jake Henthorn before the Pointers used a corner kick by Merrick Harris to tie the game at the 26-minute mark.

In the second half, Merrick rifled a goal from 30 yards out to put the Pointers in front at the 52-minute mark.

But Minford tied the game three minutes later on a goal by Elijah Craft.

Lucas recorded seven saves. Minford goalie Matthew Gullett had five saves.

South Point hosts Chesapeake on Thursday with the girls’ game at 5:30 and boys at 7:30.
