Jury gets case in trial of jailers

The federal jury in the trial of three Lawrence County Jail corrections officers received the case at approximately 4 p.m. today. The jury was to pick a foreman and then leave for the day.

The jury is expected to begin deliberations at 9 a.m. Wednesday. On trial are Jeremy Hanshaw, Ronald Scott Hatfield and Jason D. Mays for allegedly mistreating an inmate brought into the jail.

All three defendants are charged with conspiracy against rights and deprivation against rights under the color of the law and aiding and abetting.

The indictment alleged the three men “willfully combined, conspired and agreed with one another to injure, oppress, threaten and intimidate (the inmate) … in the right to be free from the use of unreasonable force by one acting under the color of the law.”
