FLATWOODS, Ky. — Just like in the movie “Field of Dreams,” the South Point Lady Pointers went the distance.
The Lady Pointers went five sets as they edged the Russell Lady Red Devils in a non-league volleyball game on Monday.
South Point won the first two sets 25-23, 25-14 and then lost the next two sets 25-11 and 25-144. In a tough decisive fifth set, the Lady Pointers won 16-14.
“I am really proud of our girls. They were able to fight back in the fifth set after losing the momentum during losses in the third and fourth sets. That is really hard to do,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Allen Perry.
Olivia Abner had 12 kills and Mackenzie Fugitt 9 kills to lead the offense. Hope Aylsworth had 14 digs to pace the defense.
Freshman Rachael Wheeler had 9 kills and freshman Sara Allen went to serve with the Lady Pointers down 14-13 in the fifth set, served an ace and a non-returned ball to finish out the match.
“I think we grew a little as a team tonight,” said Perry. “Our two freshmen stepped up tonight in a big way and filled their roles perfectly. Sara Allen came up big in a very big spot. That’s encouraging to see from a freshman.”
The Lady Pointers won the jayvee game in two sets.
South Point visits Chesapeake on Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
