Local trio qualify for district golf

FRIENDSHIP — Looks like a few guys are going to need to buy some more golf balls.
Three local players were among the top five individuals advancing to the district tournament after placing among the top five individual scores at the Division II sectional tournament Tuesday at Shawnee Golf Course.
The Ironton Fighting Tigers’ senior Cory Rawlins and Fairland Dragons tandem of senior Hayden James and freshman Reece Bellville all qualified for the district tournament.
Also qualifying for the district were Mitchell McFarland of Wheelersburg with a 73 and William Sheets of River Valley at 84.
The top five teams and top five individual scores of players not on qualifying teams advance to the district tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Crown Hill Golf Course in Williamsport.
Piketon won the tournament with a 310-team score. Gallipolis was runner-up at 330 followed by Portsmouth at 340, Portsmouth West 345 and Waverly 346 to comprise the five qualifying teams for the district.
Fairland was sixth with a 361, Ironton posted a 372 score followed by Wheelersburg at 381, River Valley 408, the Rock Hill Redmen 425, Northwest 426, Wellston 432, the South Point Pointers 459 and Minford 461.
James had rounds of 38 and 40 for a 78 total and Bellville had a 42 and 40 for an 82.
Other Fairland scores were Cameron Sheppard 48 and 51 for 99, Connor Franklin 48-54 for 102 and Dillon Raines 51-51 for a 102.
Rawlins led Ironton with an 86 on rounds of 41 and 45. Chandler Dodson had an 89 with a 44-45, Mason Slagel 49-48 for 97, Mitchell Weisgarber 51-49 for 100, and Trevor Hacker 49-56 for a 105.
Logan Reed shot an 87 with rounds of 46 and 41 to lead Rock Hill. Jason Haywood had a 45 and 51 for 96, Chase Nelson 58 and 62 for a 120 and Austin Riddle 52 and 70 for a 122.
South Point was led by Beau Taylor at 99 on rounds of 46 and 53. Eddie Chinn had a 51-54 for a 105, Logan Wade 62-60 for 122 and Drew Smith 65-68 for a 133 total.
