COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio’s annual weeklong period for hunting white-tailed deer with guns has begun.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says deer-gun season began Monday and will end Sunday, Dec. 6. Hunters also will have two bonus days this year on Dec. 28 and Dec. 29.
The state agency says deer are present in all 88 of Ohio’s counties. There are restrictions on hunting in urban areas.
Hunters are being asked to assist wildlife biologists in closely monitoring the condition of deer they harvest this year.
Some sections of Holmes and Wayne counties in east-central Ohio have been designated for monitoring of a neurological disease that affects white-tailed deer, elk and moose. State officials say about 19 captive white-tailed deer in Ohio have tested positive for chronic wasting disease since October 2014.
