BEAVER — It takes a thief.

The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings had 28 steals as they opened Southern Ohio Conference play with a 73-65 win over the Beaver Eastern Lady Eagles on Monday.

“We played good defense and we got a lot of shots out of it. We didn’t shoot a great percentage, but we took a lot of shots and we made a lot of shots,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Alvin Carpenter.

Breanna Brumfield had 7 steals while Caitlyn Crabtree and Payton Walsh had 4 each to lead the Lady Vikings’ defense.

Meranda Hayes led the Lady Vikings with 21 points, Kaitlyn Payne added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Jensyn Shepherd had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Brumfield had 13 points and 7 assists. Payne had 6 assists.

Carson Roney had a game-high 32 points to lead Eastern.

Brumfield and and Shepherd scored 6 points each in the first quarter to offset 7 points by Roney as Symmes Valley took a 20-15 lead.

Hayes scored 7 points in the second quarter as the Lady Vikings (1-1,1-0) pulled away to a 42-19 lead.

Each team scored 18 points in the third quarter as Payne scoered 7 points and Staker hit a pair of 3-pointes and scored 8 of her 10 points.

Eastern (0-2, 0-2) outscored the Lady Vikings 25-13 in the fourth quarter as Roney had 12 points. But Hayes scored 8 points to help Symmes Valley hold on for the win.

Symmes Valley hosts New Boston on Thursday.
