PORTSMOUTH — The Chesapeake Lady Panthers like being single.

Now, the Lady Panthers aren’t talking about not being married but rather their defensive effort as they toppled the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 54-23 on Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We played really well defensively,” said Lady Panthers’ coach Chris Ball. “Any time you can hold a team to single digits in each quarter, you’ve done a pretty good job.”

Chesapeake took an 18-5 first quarter lead as Kaylee Curry scored 6 points and Kelsey Huff 5.

The Lady Panthers limited Portsmouth to 7 points in the second quarter to lead 27-12 at the half.

Atiya Spaulding and Curry scored 8 points each in the third quarter as the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Trojans 17-4 to grab a comfortable 44-16 cushion.

Curry had 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals to lead Chesapeake (4-1, 3-1). Spaulding added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Jozy Jones topped the Lady Panthers with 9 rebounds, Natalee Hall had 3 assists while Brooke Webb had 4 steals and 5 blocked shots.

Semajah Parker scored 9 points for Portsmouth (2-5, 1-3).

On Thursday, Chesapeake hosts Ironton in a battle for first place in the league.

Portsmouth is at New Boston on Wednesday and hosts Fairland in an OVC game on Thursday.
