WILLOW WOOD — Now, that was big.

The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings not only got a big win they got it in a big way as they routed the Sciotoville East Lady Tartans 74-57 on Monday.

“That was a big win for us. East has played well this year and they can beat anyone in the league,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Alvin Carpenter.

“Our girls played well in all phases of the game. We hit our free throws and that was big, too.”

Symmes Valley is now 5-2 and 4-1 in the Southern Ohio Conference.

Kaitlyn Payne had 19 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals to lead the Lady Vikings while Jensyn Shepherd posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Meranda Hayes and Payton Walsh scored 10 points each for Symmes Valley.

Shay Brown scored a game-high 32 points — 17 in the fourth quarter — to lead East. Peyton Helpinstein added 14 points.

Shepherd scored 6 points in the first quarter as Symmes Valley took a 17-9 lead.

Payne had 7 points in the second quarter and the lead was 31-19 at the half.

Walsh scored 8 points in the third quarter to counter Helpinstein’s 7 points and the lead grew to 52-35.

Payne converted five free throws over the final 1:30 of the game to keep the double-digit cushion.

Symmes Valley was 28-of-64 from the field — 2-of-4 from the 3-point line — and converted 16-of-21 free throws.

The Lady Vikings visits Portsmouth Clay on Thursday in an SOC game.
