Chase Walters might want to compete in one of those strongest man contest. St. Joseph Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan says Walters can carry a whole basketball team.

Walters played well in the clutch as he helped the Flyers beat the Southern Tornadoes 64-57 in overtime on Saturday.

“We took the lead late in the fourth quarter, but we couldn’t make enough free throws to seal the win,” said Sheridan. “Chase put us on his shoulders in overtime and we were able to hang on.”

Walters scored a career-high 26 points and freshman Isaac Whaley had his most productive game offensively with 12 points to lead the Flyers (2-4).

Crenson Rogers scored 17 points, Dylan Smith 11 and Blake Johnson 10 for the Tornadoes (0-7).

St. Joseph took an 11-6 lead the first quarter as Whaley had 5 points including a trifecta.

The lead grew to 30-20 at the half as Judge Williams scored 5 points while Payton Adkins, Whaley and Walters all had 4 points each.

“We started the game very sloppy but we finished the first quarter strong and it carried over into the second quarter,” said Sheridan.

The Flyers could not find the basket in the third quarter as they scored just 3 points — all by Adkins.

“They outplayed us is every facet of the game in the third quarter. We had to fight our tails off to get back in the game,” said Sheridan.

But the Flyers rebounded to score 18 points in the fourth quarter as Walters had 9 points and Zac McGraw went 3-of-3 from the foul line.

Southern had 13 points in the fourth quarter thanks to 7-of-11 free throws.

Foul shooting was key in the overtime as well.

The Flyers were 7-of-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. Walters was 4-of-6, Trey Neal 2-for-2 and Isaac Whaley 1-of-2.

Southern had just one field goal in overtime and made 4-of-6 foul shots.

The Flyers play Huntington St. Joe at 8:15 p.m. Monday in The Ironton Classic.
