Lady Panthers win defensive struggle

CHESAPEAKE — Defenses dominated.

In a defensive struggle, the Chesapeake Lady Panthers beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 36-27 on Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Kaylee Curry scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace Chesapeake (9-2, 4-2).

Jozy Jones added 8 points, Dominique Murphy pulled down 9 rebounds, Natalee Hall had 3 assists and 3 steals while Brooke Webb blocked 6 shots.

Kasey Murphy scored 8 points while Destiny Dolen and Lauren Crum had 6 points each for Coal Grove (2-6, 1-4).

The game was tied 10-10 in the first quarter as Curry scored 6 points.

Dominique Murphy was 4-of-6 at the line in second quarter as Chesapeake went up 17-13 at the half.

Curry scored 7 points in the third quarter and the defense held Coal Grove to 3 points for the second straight quarter to lead 27-16.

Coal Grove’s Kasey Murphy had 6 of her 8 points in the fourth quarter but Bailey Mills hit a clutch 3-pointer that extended the Chesapeake lead to 10 points in the fourth quarter.

On Thursday in league games, Chesapeake visits Fairland while Coal Grove hosts Ironton.
