PROCTORVILLE — Now, that’s a defensive effort.

The Fairland Lady Dragons turned in their best defensive effort of the season as they beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 69-28 on Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We did a pretty good job defensively. Any time you hold a team to 28 points, you’ve done a good job,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan.

Emily Chapman scored a game-high 23 points including four 3-point goals. Emma Fulton added 10 points as 10 different players scored for the Lady Dragons (12-8-2).

Jackie Wagner grabbed six rebounds and Kelsie Warnock had five rebounds for Fairland.

Kaylee Beals and Emily Compliment scored eight points each for Coal Grove (4-11, 2-8).

Chapman scored 15 points in the first quarter as Fairland roared to a 27-6 lead. Beals scored four of Coal Grove’s points.

“Chapman was hot early and got us off to a great start. But we shot the ball really well as a team,” said Buchanan referring to the 12 3-point goals for the game by the Lady Dragons.

Morgan Fridley, Warnock and Chapman scored five points each in the second quarter as the lead grew to 45-15 at the half. Lauren Crum had four points for the Lady Hornets.

Fairland blew the game open in the third quarter by outscoring Coal Grove 19-2. Fulton scored eight points including a pair of 3-pointers.

Buchanan played his backups in the fourth quarter.

On Thursday, Fairland visits South Point in a league game.

Coal Grove is at Rose Hill, Ky., on Tuesday and hosts Gallipolis on Thursday in an OVC game.
