Marshall 78, Old Dominion 75
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — James Kelly nailed a 3-pointer with four seconds to go and Marshall edged Old Dominion 78-75 on Saturday.
Kelly scored 21 points with 12 rebounds and had four steals with a blocked shot for the Thundering Herd (10-10, 6-1 Conference USA). Ryan Taylor scored 19 points with seven boards, Stevie Browning had 15 points and Jon Elmore added 13. Marshall shot 51 percent overall.
Trey Freeman led Old Dominion (10-10, 3-4) with a career-high 37 points. Brandan Stith scored 15 points and Zoran Talley added 10. Aaron Bacote, who averages 15.0 points per game, was held to three points on 1-of-8 shooting.
A close game throughout, Freeman’s layup with 31 seconds left tied it at 75. On the ensuing possession, Elmore’s layup attempt was blocked by Stith, but Marshall corralled the rebound and Kelly nailed a 3-pointer with four seconds left to put the Herd up. Freeman’s desperate attempt at the horn to tie was no good.
