WILLOW WOOD — Patience wasn’t just a virtue for the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings, it was the key to success.

Struggling with their shooting, the Lady Vikings remained patient until the shots began to fall in a 41-27 win over the South Gallia Lady Rebels on Saturday.

The Lady Vikings were just 16-of-54 from the field for 29 percent. However, the defense shut down the Lady Rebels including a scoreless second quarter.

“We just had to be patient and wait for things to open up. We weren’t hitting early, but then we finally hit a few shots and we were able to get to the basket a few times and then open up some breathing room,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Alvin Carpenter.

Jensyn Shepherd scored six points in the first quarter as Symmes Valley took an 11-10 lead.

The Lady Vikings blanked the Rebels 7-0 in the second quarter and it was 18-10 at the half.

South Gallia cut the deficit to 25-18 after three quarters, but Meranda Hayes scored eight points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Vikings began to pull away.

Shepherd had 12 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double to lead the Lady Vikings (11-8). Hayes scored 10 points, Caitlyn Crabtree had 11 rebounds and Kaitlyn Payne added eight points and six assists.

Ashley Northrup scored nine to lead South Gallia (3-16).

The Lady Vikings host Western on Wednesday and Portsmouth Clay on Thursday.
