Even with a big man inside, Sciotoville East used the outside to get the edge.

The East Tartans his seven 3-pointers to go with 18 points by 6-foot-5 Blaine Scott as they beat the St. Joseph Flyers 64-54 on Thursday.

J.D. Hatcher scored 13 points and Akia Brown added nine to lead the Tartans (15-4).

St. Joseph (4-13) got a game-high 25 points from Tyler Ward. Chase Walters scored 18 points and Clay Willis added nine points.

The Flyers were missing outside scoring threats Zac McGraw and Tre Neal due to illness.

“It was a sloppy first half and we were only down nine,” said Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan. We were shorthanded so we played more zone than I would have liked.

“East is a very good team who plays very hard and very physical.”

Scott had five points and Drew Lowe hit a pair of 3-pointers as East took a 13-7 first quarter lead.

Scott had nine points in the second quarter and Kyle Flannery hit a 3-pointer but Ward scored seven points including a trifecta of his own and the Flyers trailed 27-18 at the half.

The third quarter proved to be pivotal as East outscored the Flyers 28-17 to build a 55-34 lead.

“Once again we came out flat in the third quarter and they outscored us 28-17. We can’t keep doing that,” said Sheridan.

Brown and Hatcher had six points each, Will Shope knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and Flannery added another triple for East.

Ward and Walters did all the damage for the Flyers as they combined for all 17 points. Ward had nine points including a trey while Walters had the other eight points.

St. Joseph outscored East 20-9 in the fourth quarter as Willis scored six points while Ward and Walters combined for 10 points.

Hatcher hit a 3-pointer and scored seven of East’s nine points in the quarter.

St. Joseph plays Federal Hocking at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Meigs High School in the Division IV sectional tournament.
