PHOENIX (AP) – Adam Duvall had three hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 on Friday.

Duvall, who played third base after playing mostly outfield this spring, hit a line shot that landed over the grass berm in left field in the first and added a third-inning single off Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson.

“I’m getting to play a lot of positions and the versatility factor definitely helps when you are trying to win a job,” Duvall said. “I got a good pitch to hit and if I’m going to hit one out I want to hit it on a line. I’m not a guy who’s going to hit those towering ones.”

Tyler Holt put Cincinnati ahead to stay with a two-run single in the eighth.

Billy Hamilton was 0 for 3 for Cincinnati and played center field for the first time since March 2 after having offseason shoulder surgery and dealing with shoulder soreness the past two weeks. He had one putout in center.

“It was fun to get back out there and get used to it,” Hamilton said. “When you are coming off an injury, you look forward to that first day back. I wish I had more chances, but I’m sure they will come.”

Chris Carter hit his third home run for the Brewers and Ryan Braun had an RBI double in his second appearance of the spring.

“I’m feeling good right now, seeing pitches and getting the barrel on the ball,” said Carter, the starter at first base for Milwaukee. “I want to get in a groove here with a few weeks left in spring to make sure I’m ready.”

Milwaukee reliever Franklin Morales, who signed a minor league deal with the Brewers on March 5, made his first appearance and pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

STARTING TIME

Reds: RHP Anthony DeSclafani struck out seven in 4 2-3 innings but also allowed four runs and six hits.

Brewers: Anderson allowed his fourth homer of the spring but lowered his ERA to 10.13 as only one of the four runs he allowed was earned.

“That’s two, three in a row where the first inning has got him, then he’s been pretty good,” Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said.

BLANKMAN

There were several Joey Votto No. 19 jerseys in the stands at Maryvale Ballpark, but none on the field for warmups.

Votto was there, though. But he forgot his jersey at Goodyear Ballpark and lined up for the National Anthem wearing a blank Reds jersey.

It wasn’t an attempt to change his luck. Votto came into the game hitting .391 with nine hits in 23 at-bats.

But just before the first pitch, Votto’s jersey arrived in the dugout and all was well. Properly attired, Votto had an RBI single in the first.

TRAINING ROOM

Reds: RHP Jon Moscot, scratched from his start with a muscle strain on Wednesday, is hoping to miss only one turn in the rotation.

Brewers: Braun had his second hit in as many at-bats when he one-hopped a double off the right field wall in the first inning and is 2 for 3 for the spring after striking out in the third. He is playing every other day as he comes off back surgery this winter. … Scooter Gennett had a single, double and home run as a designated hitter in his first at-bats of the spring on Thursday. He will give his sore shoulder a first test at second base on Saturday.
