Students at Ironton Elementary School got a special visit on Tuesday from Ironton Police Office John Hammonds and the department’s furry investigator, Goose the police dog.

Hammonds started by speaking to the third graders in the library before going around to a few classrooms to talk about Goose, answering questions from the students afterward.

“He came from a kennel in San Antonio, Texas,” Hammonds, who handles Goose, said. “I stayed two and a half weeks down there when I got him and prior to that, he had six weeks of training.”

Hammonds and the police department has had Goose since August of last year.

Hammonds said this was only the second time he has brought Goose along to teach students at school, adding to Cannonsburg Elementary School in Kentucky.

“I like to teach the kids that if they come in contact with an officer and a police dog, there’s no reason to be afraid,” Hammonds said.
