Flyers sweep East

Jim Walker

NEW BOSTON — The 2-for-5 special had more to it than just sandwiches at area fast food restaurants.

The St. Joseph Flyers picked up two five-inning wins on Saturday as they swept the Sciotoville East Tartans 6-4 and 5-2.

“We moved the lineup around a little to kind of get us going and we hit the ball a little better,” said Flyers’ first-year head coach Lou Mains.

“Our pitchers did a good job and we played pretty good defense. We have a few things to work one. We can’t walk so many batters.”

Brad Rist tossed a 4-hitter in the first game to get the win. He struck out three and walk four.

Clay Willis worked the nightcap and hurled a 3-hitter with nine strikeouts and five walks.

East took a 4-0 lead in the first inning but the Flyers got three runs in the second.

Zac McGraw tripled and Tyler Ward reached on an error. Ward moved up on a wild pitch, Rist walked and stole second to set up a two-run single by Gage Butler.

The Flyers took the lead with three runs in the fourth.

Rist walked, Willis put down a sacrifice bunt and Butler singled. Isaac Whaley then double, moved to third on a wild pitch and Seth Kelly had an RBI single.

In the second game, the Flyers got a run in the first inning when Peyton Adkins singled, Chase Walters reached on an error and a wild pitch scored the run.

St. Joseph opened up a 5-0 lead with four runs in the second.

Rist singled, Whaley reached on an error and Adkins belted a triple. Kelly reached on an error and Walters capped the rally with a base hit.

The Flyers visit South Point on Thursday.
