CHESAPEAKE — There was an old Cary Grant movie called “Walk, Don’t Run,” and the Ventures did a song by the same name.
The Chesapeake Panthers decided to do “Walks Mean Runs” on Monday in a 12-1 five-inning Ohio Valley Conference loss to the Gallipolis Blue Devils.
Four Chesapeake pitchers combined to walk 10 batters to go with eight Gallipolis hits. The Panthers managed just four hits and drew only two walks.
“Teams go through bad spells and we’re going through one right now,” said Panthers’ coach Justin Davis.
“We walked too many people and we didn’t hit. That’s not a good combination.”
Gallipolis (5-4, 2-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a hit by Eric Ward and an error.
Chesapeake (3-3, 2-3) got its only run in the bottom of the first when Casey McComas singled, Kolton Webb reach on an error and Blake Ashworth singled.
Four walks and an error helped Gallipolis score two in the second. Two walks, an error, singles by Kole Carter and Matt Bailey and a double by Anthony Sipple gave the Blue Devils a 9-1 lead in the third.
On Wednesday, Chesapeake visits Fairland and Gallipolis hosts Portsmouth.
