PROCTORVILLE — Wins aren’t accidents.
The Fairland Dragons showed how teams produce wins as they used pitching and defense to edge the Chesapeake Panthers 3-1 on Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We played pretty well. When you get good pitching and play good defense then good results usually happen,” said Fairland coach Alex Beelen.
Fairland (4-5, 4-2) got good pitching from Seth Clay with a three-hitter. He struck out nine and walked two.
Derek Morris and Dakota Blankenship allowed only five hits for Chesapeake (3-4, 2-4).
“We didn’t hit well, but we played a cleaner game defensively. Both teams played pretty well defensively,” said Panthers’ coach Justin Davis.
Fairland took a 2-0 led in the first when Tyler George singled, Collin Damron and Clay walked and Eli Bowen had a two-run single.
The Dragons went up 3-0 in the third. George singled, stole second and Clay had a two-out single.
Chesapeake (3-4, 2-4) got its run in the seventh when Dalton Nida doubled off the top of the left field fence and scored as Kelton Jones reached on a throwing error.
In OVC games on Friday, Fairland visits South Point and Chesapeake hosts Coal Grove.
