CHILLICOTHE — Winning for the St. Joseph Flyers was as easy as flicking their “Rist.”
Brad Rist, that is.
Rist threw a four-hitter and the Flyers beat the Whiteoak Wildcats 5-2 on Monday at Veterans’ Stadium.
Rist struck out four and walked only three in going the distance.
“Brad pitched a heck of a ball game. He threw strikes and had good command of his pitches,” said Flyers’ coach Lou Mains.
“We got five hits in a row and that’s going to score some runs. We had trouble stringing hits together.”
St. Joseph scored all five of its runs in the second inning on a walk and five singles.
Zac McGraw opened the inning with a base hit with Rist and Clay Willis following with singles for a run. James Carter walked tol oad the bases and Austin Caskey hit into a fielder’s choice as a run scored.
Isaac Whaley and Gage Butler had RBI singles and Seth Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to cap the uprising.
Whiteoak got its two runs in the fourth on a single by Trevor Yeager, walks to Evan Brill and Austin Lewis, a single by Traeton Hamilton and then Jacob Burns reached on a two-out error.
Willis was 2-3 and Whaley 2-4 to lead the Flyers who had seven hits.
St. Joseph played Sciotoville East on Saturday and visits Rose Hill, Ky., on Monday.
