Lady Hornets split games at Thunder

AID — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets played well as they split two games in the Valley of Thunder Softball Classic on Saturday at Symmes Valley.

The Lady Hornets split their games with the Central Crossing Lady Comets and Eastern Meigs Lady Eagles.

Central Crossing built a lead early and held on to beat the Lady Hornets 6-3.

The Lady Comets got a run in the top of the first when Emily Gant bunted for a hit, moved up on a passed ball and scored on Cass Coukart’s single.

Coal Grove tied the game in the bottom of the inning on singles by Lauren Meyer, Kasey Murphy, McKenzie Moore and an error.

Central Crossing went up 4-1 in the second inning.

Lilah Diggs and Amber Hager singled, Gant doubled for two runs and two errors scored Gant.

The Lady Hornets cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third. When Murphy doubled and Crum launched a two-run homer.

The Lady Comets added two insurance runs in the sixth.

Hager reached on an error, moved up on a passed ball and a groundout and scored on Gant’s groundout.

Sydney Humphrey was safe on an error and scored on Coukart’s double.

The Lady Hornets bounced back to beat the Eastern Meigs 8-6.

Coal Grove took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Gracie Riley and Murphy singled and Crum doubled them home.

Meyer singled, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0 in the second.

Eastern scored in the fourth when Sidney Cook and Jess Coleman both reached on errors.

The Lady Eagles took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth with four runs.

Taylynn Rockhold singled, Mollie Moxon walked and Courtney Fitzgerald reached on an error for a run. Kaitlyn Costo singled, Emmalea Durst doubled for two runs and Morgan Baer was safe on an error for a run.

Coal Grove answered with four runs in its half of the inning.

Meyer bunted for a hit and went to second on an error. Riley doubled her home and Murphy singled to score Riley. Crum singled, Moore walked and Kylee Keaton singled for two runs.

The Lady Hornets added a run in the sixth when Shelby Zerkle walked and Meyer tripled to score pinch-runner Kaydee Richardson.

Coal Grove hosts Gallipolis on Monday.
