Hornets turn back Titans 6-3

PORTSMOUTH — Dylan Malone kept it close until his teammates opened it up.

Malone held Portsmouth Notre Dame scoreless for five innings and then the Coal Grove Hornets scored five times in the sixth inning en route to a 6-3 win over the Titans on Tuesday.

Malone went the distance to get the win as he scattered eight hits, struck out one and walked three.

“Dylan Malone pitched really well and we did a nice job coming back. It was a good team win,” said Hornets’ coach Dean Mader.

Coal Grove took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Isaac Howard walked and Darin Bloomfield and Cole Gannon both singled.

The Hornets then scored five times in the top of the sixth to lead 6-0.

Howard and Bloomfield walked and Angelo and Gannon had RBI singles. Jacob Clark, Daniel Rutherford and Jeb Jones all followed with base hits.

Notre Dame scored two in the bottom of the inning. Grant Sparks singled, Sam Kayser and Cam Rodriguez both walked and Truman Hash singled.

The Titans added a run in the seventh when Brandon Lansing singled, went to second on an error, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Chase Rodriguez grounded out.

Rutherford and Bloomfield were both 2-3 to lead the Hornets.

Hash was 2-2 while Lansing and Sparks went 2-4 for the Titans.

Coal Grove visits Ironton on Thursday.
