Helen Bruce

May 23, 1925 — May 1, 2016

Helen V. Bruce, 90, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2016, at a local health care center. The Lawrence County native was born May 23, 1925, a daughter of the late Curt and Luella Schafer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bruce.

Helen attended Kitts Hill High School and graduated from Ironton High School with the class of 1943 and then received her bachelor’s degree from Marshall University. She was a homemaker and former teacher for the Ironton School District. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ironton where she was a former Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and was active in the Ladies Circle One. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Gideons Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Charlene Dunkelberger; and four brothers, Bill, Ken, Curtis, and Thomas Schafer.

She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Nancy (Jeff) Elkins, of Ironton; a son, Danny (Camie) Bruce, of Ashland, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Heather (Mark) Mains, of Ironton, Melanie ( Mike) Asbury, of Ashland, Kentucky, Laura Bruce, of Ashland, Kentucky, Sarah Bruce, of Ashland, Kentucky, and Staci (Samuel) Brown, of El Paso, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Tyler and Aubrey Mains and Theodore and Daniel Bruce. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews.

Peggy Mitchell

Jan. 28, 1946 — April 30, 2016

Peggy Sue (Burnett) Mitchell, 70, of Delphos, and formerly of Conyers, Georgia, died at 4:35 p.m. Saturday at the Hearth and Home at Van Wert. She was born on Jan. 28, 1946, in Ironton, the daughter of the late Sam and Margarette (Barnett) Burnett. She married William “Bill” Mitchell, who preceded her in death.

Peggy had worked as a secretary for Bill Hudson and Jim Bryce Law Firm for 30 years in Decatur, Georgia. Family survivors include her two sisters, Linda Burnett, of Delphos and Sheila Burnett, of Panama City, Florida; two nieces, Becky Markins, of Convoy and Chris Mitchener, of Middle Point; three nephews, Jamie (Sue) Markins, of Celina, Craig (Ashley) Walls and Clint (Kaitlyn) Nobles, both of Columbus; and 15 great-nieces and nephews.

Private ceremony will be at Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert, officiated by the Rev. Bud Walls. In lieu of flowers please donate to American Cancer Society.

 

Jenny Hogsten

Dec. 24, 1939 — May 3, 2016

Jenny Lee Hogsten, 76, of Ironton, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at her residence. The Charleston, West Virginia, native was born Dec. 24, 1939, the daughter of the late Lester R. Harkless and Mildred Cottrell Harkless.

Jenny attended Ironton High School and was a homemaker. She enjoyed fishing, animals and spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was also a former member of the Moose Lodge.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Alonzo Harkless; and a sister, Doris Arbritton.

Jenny is survived by five sons, Allen (Belissa) Hogsten, of Ironton, James (Martha) Hogsten, of Nashville, Tennessee, Bob McKee Hogsten, of Ironton, Chuck (Greg) Hogsten, of Ironton and Donnie Hogsten, of Ironton; two daughters, Rebecca Hogsten and Terri Crisp, of Ironton; a brother, Chuck Cottrell, of Virginia; a half brother, Paul Harkless; three half sisters, Barbara Harkless, of Ripley, West Virginia, Susie Harkless, of Columbus and Brenda Harkless, of Ravenswood, West Virginia; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with the Rev. James Cremeans officiating. Wanda M. Daniel, 93, of South Point, died Wednesday, May 4, 2016 ,at her residence. Arrangements are pending at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point.

 

Jeanne Collins-Hawk

Jeanne L. Collins-Hawk, 83, died Sunday, May 1, 2016, at Monterey Care Center in Grove City. A memorial begins at 11 a.m. with a service at 1 p.m. at Newcomer Southwest Chapel, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, followed by a graveside service at Sunset Cemetery.

 

Dennis Whitley

May 4, 1924 — May 3, 2016

Dennis Gerald Whitely, 91, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at Kingsbrook Lifecare Center in Ashland, Kentucky. He was born May 4, 1924, in Hanging Rock to the late Robert and Florence Heading Whitely. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Charlene Robinson, in 2008; a brother, Robert Whitely; a sister, Mildred Whitely; and a granddaughter, Lisa Walker.

Dennis was a member of the Beech Street Christian Church. He served his country proudly while serving in the United States Navy and was a WWII veteran. He was an amateur astronomer who constructed telescopes. He also enjoyed radio controlled airplanes. He retired as a dispatcher from Columbia Gas with 35 years of service. He was a loving and devoted father and a devout Christian.

Survivors include his sons, Eddie Whitely, of Ashland, Kentucky, and Robert (Kathy) Whitely, of Greenup, Kentucky; daughters, Sybil Trimarco and Kathy Smith (Jason Moore), both of Ashland; brother, Glenn Whitely, of Columbus; sisters, Gloria Steed, of Ironton, Carol Crisp, of Morehead, Kentucky; and a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Steen Funeral Home, 13th St. Chapel, by the Rev. Ken Vaughn. Burial will be in the Ashland Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Online condolence to www.steenfuneralhome.com.

 

Michael Nash

June 9, 1950 — April 28, 2016

Michael F. Nash, 65, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016, at his residence. The Lawrence County native was born June 9, 1950, a son of the late Henry “Frank” and Lucy “Lucille” Robinson Nash.

Mr. Nash was a graduate of Ironton High School and was of the Baptist faith. He moved to Ironton from Columbus in 1998.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Nash.

He is survived by his son, Jeremy F. Nash, of Grove City.

Esther Fay Cotton, 85, of Huntington, West Virginia, died Tuesday, May 3, 2106, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington, West Virginia.
