Remains in local hospital for injury to leg

PROCTORVILLE — A Proctorville teen is in the hospital after accidentally shooting himself over the weekend.

According to police chief Bill Murphy, the incident took place at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, during the village yard sale.

A 16-year-old boy went to his grandfather’s vehicle, where he found a gun and accidentally shot himself in the leg.

“My understanding is that it went through his leg and came out his kneecap,” Murphy said.

The bleeding could not be stopped at the scene, and he was taken to Cabell Huntington Hospital.

“They thought he nicked an artery,” Murphy said.

The teen remained hospitalized, as of Monday morning, and Murphy said he would pay a visit to the hospital to follow up.
