Fairland favored in OVC track meet

PROCTORVILLE — Unlike most sports, track settles its league champion in one day.

The Ohio Valley Conference will crown its boys and girls champions today when the league meet is held at 5 p.m. at Fairland.

Not only is the meet at Fairland but both the Dragons and Lady Dragons are odds-on favorites to win their respective team titles.

Chesapeake, Rock Hill South Point and Coal Grove will contend on the boys’ side while Portsmouth, Coal Grove and Gallipolis offer the biggest challenge for the Lady Dragons.

The Dragons will have to utilize their depth to win the meet. Their top favorites are Drake Cox in the discus, Bryce Day in the 800 meters

The boys’ meet has numerous favorites in each event including Ironton’s Eli Willis in the pole vault, South Point’s Cole Christian in the shot put and Owen Chafin in the 100 meters, Rock Hill’s Seth Miller in the 3200 along with teammate Brendon McCormick in the 1600.

Ironton’s Derek McCallister and South Point’s Trent Patterson will vye for the 200-meter title along with Chafin. The Pointers are also favored in the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relays with Rock Hill favored in the 4×800.

The Lady Dragons are led by a group of freshmen including Allie Marshall who is favored to win the high jump, the 100- and 300-meter hurdles as well as the 200 meters.

Also among the favorites for the Lady Dragons are Tori Hall in the long jump, Breanna Brewer in the shot put and Jackie Wagner in the discus. McKenna Pannell is the favorite in the 1600 and 3200.

The Lady Dragons are favored in three relays with Coal Grove the top favorite in the 4×400.
