Fletcher leads D3 track qualifiers

LANCASTER — Cecil Fletcher had a lot to do at the Division III regional track meet. He decided to include winning on his “To Do” list.

The Chesapeake Panthers’ sophomore sprinter participated in four events that included a first place finish in the 400-meter dash preliminaries on Wednesday at Fairfield Union High School.

Fletcher qualified for Friday’s finals as he had the best qualifying time in the 400 with a time of 50.6 seconds. Fletcher edged Jerome Buckner of Columbus Academy who ran a 50.64 and teammate Kevin Boyce who had a 50.67 time.

Fletcher also qualified in the 100-meter dash with an 11.46 time to finish seventh. He added to his busy day by placing seventh in the long jump with a leap of 19-3.75.

Chesapeake’s 4×400 relay was ninth as J.W. Bartrum, David Dotson, Gabriel Johnson and Fletcher had a 3:42.53 time.

Coal Grove 4×400 relay team of Kyle Sites, Nathaniel Brumett, Nathan Harmon and Joey Workman was seventh with a 3:38.58 time to qualify for Friday’s finals.

Rock Hill’s 4×400 quartet of Brandon Burditt, Brady Knipp, Ethan Miller and Brendon McCormick was 12th at 3:48.74.

However, Rock Hill’s 4×800 relay placed sixth as Seth Miller, Victory Aguilera, Ethan Miller and McCormick ran a combined time of 8:35.86. The 4×800 race was the finals.

The Redmen’s Seth Baker was ninth in the pole vault as he cleared 11-feet.

Coal Grove’s Kayla Curry was 10th in the shot put with a heave of 32-11.25.

The Lady Hornets’ 4×100 relay team of Chelsie Curry, Lauren Meyer, Kaylee Beals and Emily Compliment were 13th with a 53.94 time.

Portsmouth Lady Trojans sprinter Lynsey Shipley qualified in three events. Shipley was first in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes.

The remaining finals will be held Friday. Field events begin at 4 p.m. and running events at 4:30.
