Penguins top Sharks in Game 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Nick Bonino scored with 2:33 left to help the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday night.

The Penguins’ penalty kill made Bonino’s goal stand up by keeping the Sharks from scoring on a power play in the final minutes.

Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary also scored for the Penguins, who got 24 saves from Matt Murray.

The Penguins threw 41 shots at Jones, well over the 28 he faced on average during San Jose’s playoff run.

San Jose’s Martin Jones had 38 saves, but couldn’t get in front of Bonino’s shot, which was made possible by Kris Letang’s pass from behind the net.

Tomas Hertl and Patrick Marleau scored for San Jose, which erased a 2-0 deficit to get back into the game.

Game 2 is Wednesday.

The Sharks made it to the first Stanley Cup Final in franchise history by rebuilding themselves on the fly. in front of Jones.
