Man gets prison time for burglaries

A South Point man already in prison in West Virginia admitted crimes in Lawrence County Wednesday in common pleas court.

Brian Layne, 30, of 106 Freeman Court, South Point, pleaded guilty to one second- and one third-degree count of burglary and a fifth-degree count of theft by deception.

Dismissed were three counts of theft by deception, one fourth-degree count of grand theft, two misdemeanor theft counts, three third-degree theft of firearms and three fifth-degree counts of theft.

Judge Charles Cooper sentenced the man to 10 years in prison and that time will run concurrently with time he is already serving in West Virginia.

Layne apologized to his mother and family, saying “drugs caused this,” and he “hoped to get on the road to recovery.”

In other cases:

• Tyler Denney, 29, of 621 S. Eighth St., Apt. D, Ironton, pleaded guilty to a third-degree count of tampering with evidence and two second-degree burglaries.

Cooper sentenced the man to eight years in prison.

• Jeremy Smith, 25, of 3336 Williamsburg Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan, was arraigned on second-degree counts of trafficking in drugs and possession of drugs. Cooper set bond at $75,000 cash or surety and set a pretrial for Aug. 3.

• Stephen Jenkins, 58, of 5207 County Road 19, Kitts Hill, pleaded no contest to a count of third-degree vehicular assault, which was amended from a second degree count of aggravated vehicular assault. Sentencing was set for July 27.

• Megan Benicker, 31, of 1519 Thomas St., Ironton, was arraigned in a bill of information of fourth-degree burglary and misdemeanor criminal damaging, to which she pleaded guilty. Cooper ordered a presentence investigation and set sentencing for July 27.

• Charlene Childers, 33, of 103 Scioto Ave., South Point, admitted CCS violations. Judge D. Scott Bowling sentenced the man to two months in prison.

• Amy Pringle, 32, of Huntington, was arraigned in a bill of information of fifth-degree possession of drugs and possession of cocaine and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia, to which she pleaded guilty. Bowling set sentencing for July 20 and ordered a PSI.

• Cheyenne Halley, 29, of 1108 Council St. Apt. B, Flatwoods, Kentucky, admitted CCS violations and was sentenced the STAR.

• Brandon Primm, 32, of 801 Little Solida Road, South Point, was arraigned on fifth-degree counts of possession of criminal tools and trafficking in marijuana, to which he pleaded not guilty. Bowling continued bond from a lower court and added a $10,000 own-recognizance bond. A pretrial was set for July 27.

• Keith Lanning, 42, of 1314 S. Eighth St., Ironton, pleaded guilty to three fourth-degree counts of trafficking in heroin. Bowling ordered a PSI and set sentencing for July 20.

• Clinton Spurlock, 29, of 11928 Kelly Drive, Ashland, was arraigned on a fifth-degree count of misuse of a credit card, to which he pleaded not guilty. Bowling continued bond from a lower court and added $10,000 OR. A pretrial was set for July 27.

• Misty Ashworth, 39, of 611 20th St., Huntington, admitted CCS violations and was sentenced to six months in prison.

• Kayla Weed, 29, of 265 Township Road 1030, South Point, was arraigned on a bill of information of fifth-degree possession of heroin, to which she pleaded guilty. Bowling sentenced her to treatment in lieu of conviction.

• Jennifer Flora, 26, of 6471 Merrits Creek Road, Huntington, admitted CCS violations and was sentenced to prison with a release to STAR.

• Lisa Rentz, 31, of 541, Hull Ave., Findlay, was arraigned on counts of third-degree tampering with evidence and fifth-degree possession of heroin, to which she pleaded not guilty. Bowling set bond at $10,000 cash or surety and OR. A pretrial was set for Aug. 3.
