SOUTH POINT — Negating the big hitters proved to be a big help to the South Point Lady Pointers.
Staying on the attack was the difference as the Lady Pointers beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets in an Ohio Valley Conference volleyball game on Tuesday, 25-20, 25-8 and 25-10.
“(Coal Grove coach) Tricia (Holmes) has some big hitters with Kasey Murphy and Emily Compliment and we were fortunate tonight to spend most of our time on the attack instead of the defense trying to dig them up,” said South Point coach Allen Perry.
“Our upperclassmen stepped up big tonight. At times this season I am sure they have been frustrated as we have gone through some growing pains but they never give up. They have stuck together and have never stopped working hard.”
Mackenzie Fugitt had 13 kills and 13 digs while Brooklyn Badgett had five kills, 10 digs, 27 assists, two aces and 16 service points to lead the Lady Pointers.
“Badgett is a tremendous athlete. I rely on her heavily in all areas. The role she plays on our team is complex and she fills it well,” said Perry.
Selena Marcum had three aces, 14 digs and 100 percent serve receive as the South Point libero. Hope Aylsworth had 10 digs.
“Hope Aylsworth was asked at the beginning of the season to fill a different role for us this year. Only a true team player will do what she has been asked to do and keep a great attitude,” said Perry.
South Point beat Boyd County 25-11, 25-8, 25-8 on Monday.
Rachael Wheeler had six kills, Holly Ramey five kills and Brooklyn Badgett nine assists.
Reece Duncan led the Lady Pointers with five service aces and Selena Marcum had six digs.
In their two reserve games, South Point beat Boyd County 25-6, 25-18 and Coal Grove 25-8, 25-10. Brooke Bowen had 15 aces, 12 assists, two kills and two digs while Diamond Crawly had six kills and two aces.
South Point hosts Gallipolis on Thursday.
