COAL GROVE — Kalenia Massie and James Flemming started the Rise Movement about a year ago in hopes of helping others overcome drug addiction, something the pair knows all too well.

On Saturday, Oct. 8, Rise will host a Recovery Retreat to further their cause and bring awareness to the community.

From 10 a.m.-8 p.m. the community is invited to Paul Porter Park for free food, live music and to hear speakers like Massie and Flemming share their recovery stories. “We are giving back to the community and letting people know what addiction is about,” she said.

“How we’ve turned our lives around and help others.”

Massie said the event will be in partnership with STAR Community Justice Center, Mended Reeds and other treatment facilities.

Rise also has weekly meetings at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Dawson-Bryant High School library. Massie and Flemming have a goal to speak in all the local schools, she said.

“Our goal is to get the Lawrence County area cleaned up,” Massie said.
