CLEVELAND — U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and an aide were treated for minor injuries, following a car crash outside of Cleveland on Thursday.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that Brown’s 2016 Jeep Cherokee was struck by another vehicle after its driver ran a stop sign. The Cherokee was damaged and its airbags were deployed.
Brown and aide Will Young, who was driving, were taken to a hospital where they were treated and released.
The driver of the other vehicle was said to be unharmed.
Brown’s dog, Franklin, was in the back of his vehicle, but was not injured.
In a post to Facebook on Friday, Brown’s wife, columnist Connie Schultz, said the family’s usual precautions with their pet saved him from harm.
“The seatbelts and airbags did their job for Sherrod and Will,” she wrote. “ Franklin’s harness and belt, which we always use when he’s in the car, likely saved his life.”
Schultz wrote that Brown was back to business Friday, in time to see TEDx Talks at Cleveland State University, where she was among the speakers.
“He stayed to the end because mine was the last talk,” Shultz said. “Now, we’re hunkered down at home, where Franklin and I will pamper him like a newborn every minute of this weekend.”
On his Twitter feed, Brown, a strong advocate of organized labor, credited his vehicle’s construction for his safety.
“Thanks for care and concern,” Brown wrote. “Doing fine. Grateful to Parma police, medical staff and my Jeep, made with American steel by union workers in Toledo.”
Brown visited Ironton on Wednesday for a roundtable with city and Lawrence County leaders at Head Start’s administrative offices.
