Jean Dean

Dec. 31, 1927 — Oct. 24, 2016

Jean L. Dean, 88, of Ironton, passed away Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, at her residence. The Ironton native was born Dec. 31, 1927, a daughter of the late Emory and Rose Emmerett Schmidt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Dean, who passed away Nov. 5, 2010.
Mrs. Dean was a 1945 graduate of Ironton High School and a former secretary for the EPA in Durham, North Carolina, retiring in 1989 after 20 years of service. She attended the EUB Church in Ironton.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles H. Schmidt; and a brother-in-law, Fred Stapf.
She is survived by a daughter, Cindy (Kenny) Koerper, of Ironton; a sister, Rosemary Stapf, of Wadsworth; two grandchildren, Rebecca Jane Wrenn and Jeremy Wayne (Dakota) Wrenn, both of Ironton; three step grandchildren, Kenna (Scott) Gifford, Melanie (Ben) Mullins and Melissa Koerper; one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Jane Wrenn; five step great-grandchildren, Jared Gifford, Ryan Gifford, Benjamin Mullins, Bradley Mullins and Brayden Mullins; and several special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with Chaplain Randy Tate officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be 1 p.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. James P. Adkins, II, 29, of Huntington, West Virginia, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville.

Glen E. Daniel, 73, of Grayson, Kentucky, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, at the Veteran Administration Medical Center in Huntington. Committal services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Cemetery Northeast in Greenup County with Col. Tom Ragland officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Kenova, American Legion and Post 93. Escort will be provided by the Patriot Guard. Ben Sherman, 39, of Ironton, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016, at St. Mary’s Medical Center-Ironton Campus. He is survived by his wife, Dana Daniels Sherman. Neva Self

May 16, 1920 — Oct. 20, 2016

Neva Self, 96, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, at the Sanctuary of Ohio Valley in Ironton. The Wilgus native was born May 16, 1920, the daughter of the late Vincent Massie and Annie Reynolds Massie. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Self, who passed away Sept. 11, 1989.
Neva was a member of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church at Johns Creek. She worked at various nursing homes and retired from Edgemeade as housekeeping supervisor after eight years due to health problems.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Ben, John, Griffith, Vincent,Wilburn and Nick Massie; two sisters, Eva Massie Pinkerman and Evie Massie; two nephews raised in home, George and Alex Pinkerman; and grandson, Jerry Lee Corbin.
She is survived by four stepchildren, Patty (Henry) Self Dillon, Charles (Beverly) Self, Robert (Brenda) Self and Gregory (Pat) Self; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Lee Ann Gillispie; and a special neighbor, Lawrence Chinn.
She helped with the raising of her sister, Eva’s children after her passing, Alexander and George Pinkerman and Eva Pinkerman Phipps.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with pastor Daniel Haydon officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Condolences may be made online at www.phillipsfuneralhome.net.

Harold Leo “Jerry” Clay, 78, of Chesapeake, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington, West Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Fran Clay.
