Marshall Smith

Marshall Lee Smith, 82, of Proctorville, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016. Marshall was born in Rome, Ohio, to the late Lee Roy and Myrtie Pauline Smith on Jan. 9, 1934. He attended Fairland High School, studied Engineering at Marshall University, and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Marshall married Mary Lou Farris in 1957, and had two children, Gregory Lee and Dee Anna. Marshall started SCC, Inc. in the early 1960s, completing many commercial jobs in the eastern United States, and earning a reputation of integrity in the community. Marshall was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports, and the highlight of his day was meeting with friends every morning at McDonald’s. Marshall loved to travel, having visited every state in the U.S. Marshall, along with Bernard Edwards, were instrumental in the building of the Ohio University Proctorville Campus, named after his late son, Greg Smith. Marshall was a self-made man, having come from very humble beginnings. He loved to help others and he had a very special way of making everyone feel a part of his family. He loved his Proctorville community, always there to help with his gifts and talents.
Along with his parents, Marshall was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Smith; son, Gregory Lee Smith; sister, JoAnn Anderson; sisters-in-law, Carolyn and Anna Farris; daughter-in-law, Suzy Smith Tweel; and special aunt, Lillian Faulkner.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Smith; daughter, Dee Anna (Tim) Rucker, of Proctorville; stepdaughter, Ginger (Matt) Sly; and stepson, Buddy Marteeny, of Georgetown, Kentucky; son-in-law, Matt Tweel, of Proctorville; brother, Roy Smith, of Dayton; brothers-in-law, Steven (Anita) Collins, of Winchester, Kentucky, and Sean (Lauren) Collins, of South Haven, Mississippi; grandchildren, Kristy (Chris) Olsen, of Lenexa, Kansas, Matt (Marissa) Rucker, of Dallas, Texas, Sarah Rucker, of Kansas City, Missouri, Cassie Rucker, of Huntington, West Virginia, J.C. Tweel, of Proctorville, Tucker and Tillman Sly and Brady and Beckham Marteeny, all of Georgetown, Kentucky; great-grandchildren, Capri, Heidi and Jude Olsen, all of Lenexa, Kansas, and Trevor Rucker, of Dallas, Texas; and mother-in-law, Nancy Collins, of Frankfort, Kentucky.
Marshall’s close friends were George Walters and Gary and Ronnie Whitley. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Saturday at Ohio University Proctorville Center. Following the visitation, at 7 p.m. there will be a Celebration of Life service conducted by pastor Jason Morris. Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, is assisting the family with arrangements. Gerald Dalton, Sr.

July 6, 1946 — Dec. 10, 2016

Gerald Dean Dalton, Sr., 70, of South Point, passed away Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington, West Virginia. He was born July 6, 1946, in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, a son of the late Walter and Jesse Prince Dalton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Gerald D. Dalton, Jr.; two brothers, Bill Dalton and Jeff Dalton; and two sisters, Nora Dalton and Patricia Ratliff. Gerald was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Huntington, West Viginia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Vietnam era and was a retired Heavy Equipment Operator with AK Steel Coke Plant.
He is survived by his wife, Alida Mae Jackson Dalton; his daughter, Christina Dalton; a sister, Betty Clark; a brother, Michael Dalton; and a grandson, Denzel Dalton.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 150 Wood Lane, Huntington, West Virginia, with Denver Majher officiating. Henryetta Charlie Brown Travis, 43, of Huntington, West Virginia, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Arrangements are pending at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville.

 

Janet Dalton

May 4, 1948 — Nov. 28, 2016

Janet Lee Dalton, 68, of Shelbyville, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, at Major Hospital, Shelbyville. Janet was born May 4, 1948, in Boyd County, Kentucky to the late Joseph Calvin and Dorothy Church. She is survived by her loving husband, Donald W. Dalton, of Shelbyville, whom she married on June 10, 1966, in Ironton. Besides her husband, Janet is survived by her children, Anthony Dalton, of Shelbyville, and Jana Beth J. (Robert Marc) Dorsey, of Manilla.
Left to treasure her memories are siblings, Carol Jean (John) Delaney, of San Antonio, Florida, Mary Jo (Ken) Hulbert, of Springfield, Linda Kay (Roger) Cremeans, of Ironton, Joseph (Kelly) Church, of Racine, Wisconsin, and Tammy Vencill, of Ironton; brother-in-law, Roger McClung, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; grandchildren, Alexandria Dalton, of Orem, Utah, Janet Price, of Dowagiac, Michigan, Emily (Kyle) Bergen, of Orem, Utah, and Konrad, Kindall and Kincade Dorsey, all of Manilla, Indiana; and great-grandchildren, Eva Wright, of Niles, Michigan, Cade Bergen, of Orem, Utah.
Janet is remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. Janet graduated from Ironton High School in Ironton. During high school, she began working at Mann’s Market on Park Avenue in Ironton. With her drive and ambition, she worked her way up to an accounting position at Mann’s Market. She continued to work there until she moved to Elkhart, Indiana with her husband in 1973. Janet attended Indiana University, continuing her studies in Accounting. While in Elkhart, she worked for Federal Paper Board, Whitehall Labs and eventually retired from Goodwill Industries. Janet lived in Elkhart, Indiana for over 35 years. After retiring, she moved to Shelbyville five years ago to be near her daughter and grandchildren. Her family was the main focus of her life. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Calvin and Dorothy Church; sister, Dottie Mae McClung; son, Donald W. Dalton II; daughter, Angela Sweetay; and granddaughter, Samantha Fox Dalton. Janet was a loving, nurturing person. She was a wonderful, kind-hearted, amazing strong woman. She loved spending time with her grandchildren baking cookies, making crafts, scrap booking and watching movies. She loved to quilt and made many sampler quilts for members of the family. She was an avid reader. She loved to help and care for others, always putting others first. Janet was a treasure to all of her family and friends and will be deeply missed. In her honor, her children and grandchildren will continue her legacy of a kind, caring, strong and giving person. She will be missed more than words can ever say.
A graveside service will be at a later date in Ironton. In honor of Janet, memorial contributions may be made to the Shelby County Public Library where she loved to take her granddaughters or Major Hospital Foundation, to continue her giving spirit, at 150 W. Washington St. Shelbyville IN 46176. The Arrangements were handled by the Glenn E. George and Son Funeral Home.
