It might have been warm and calm outside, but it there were some storm clouds inside.
The St. Joseph Flyers overcame a storm of 3-point goals in the fourth quarter and held on to beat the New Boston Tigers 55-51 on Tuesday.
“We learned something and we won. That’s a good night,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey. “We had a big lead and they started hitting 3s. We weathered the storm and finally won a close game.”
Chase Walters scored 19 points and had 7 rebounds to lead the Flyers (3-5). Zac McGraw had 17 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.
Kade Conley scored 19 points — 17 in the second half — to lead New Boston. Tyler Caldwell got 14 points.
McGraw and Walters scored 5 points each in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 13-6 lead.
Zach Roach scored 5 of his 7 points in the second quarter as the Flyers extended the lead to 24-10 at the break.
“New Boston is a streaky team. I told the kids we’re not going ot hold them to 10 points in the second half,” said Cooksey.
Conley scored 6 points in the third quarter as New Boston cut the deficit to to 38-29. Walters scored 8 points and McGraw 6 in the quarter as the Flyers squandered an 18-point lead.
Caldwell hit three 3-points and Conley scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as New Boston got within 3 points.
The Flyers were 10-of-19 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to hold off the Tigers. McGraw was 4-of-6 and Walters 2-of-3 while Isaac Whaley hit a big 3-pointer and made a foul shot that gave the Flyers a 4-point lead.

“We got in one of those free throw situations in the fourth quarter where they shot 3s and then fouled us trying to get back in the game. We stepped up and made our foul shots when they counted,” said Cooksey.
St. Joseph visits Symmes Valley on Wednesday and hosts Portsmouth West on Saturday.
