It was inside vs. outside and inside won.
The St. Joseph Flyers used their inside game to beat the Portsmouth West Senators 43-40 on Saturday.
The Flyers made 16 field goals and had 12 assists. Chase Walters scored 28 points that included 11 field goals — all around the paint.
“We had a lot of assists. We moved the ball well. We pounded it and drove it and they kind of lived by the 3,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey.
Isaac Whaley had six assists and Zac McGraw four and the Flyers had just six turnovers.
Most of West’s field goal attempts were from the 3-point range. Ryan Caudill had 11 points including three 3-pointers to lead the Senators.
“We took care of the basketball and we played good defense. They had some shooters but we played hard and we played defense without fouling. We moved our feet well,” said Cooksey.
Jordan Frasure scored 5 points in the first quarter and West hit three 3-pointers in taking a 15-13 lead. Walters had 10 points in the quarter.
St. Joseph (5-5) cut the deficit to 25-24 at the half as Walters scored 6 more points.
Walters scored 6 points in the third quarter and the defense held West to 5 points as the Flyers rallied to take a 36-30 lead.
Caudill scored 8 points including a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and West took a 40-39 lead with 1:45 to play.
After a foul shot by Peyton Adkins to tie the game, McGraw fed Walters for a layup to put the Flyers ahead 42-40. Walters added a foul shot for a 43-40 lead and West missed a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Flyers visit Portsmouth Clay on Saturday.
